7 US horsemen of hypocrisy and the BP oil spill

15 06 2010

Some perspective on the American view of the BP oil spill. I’m not saying this spill is a good thing. It’s a bad thing.

I’m just saying I don’t care whether the US kicks up as they don’t clean up after themselves. It is only because it is in their backyard that they care, as normally they don’t give a shit.

Here are seven horsemen to show the way:

1. Bhopal

When the US stops protecting polluters and extradites the people who are responsible they might get some level of credibility.

2. Lehman Brothers

If the US government had intervened rather than thinking the market (the invisible hand) will solve all; more people all around the world might still have jobs. How is the US adressing unemployment caused by their ideology, in say, Birmingham, UK?

3. Nigeria

40% of the oil produced in Nigeria goes to the US. The pollution that results from the devastating oil spills causes birth defects and food shortages.

4. Nigeria (again)

40% of the oil produced in Nigeria goes to the US. People die regularly for this. The US is complicit in these deaths.

5. Kyoto

The US won’t sign on to saving the Earth. Everyone else agrees but them.

6. Exxon Valdez

Not only was the $5B fine a bit light, it was financed by the first credit default swap. Hmmmmm …. shit in, shit out?

7. Blue fin tuna in the Gulf of Mexico

The US is the biggest overfisher in the world. They’ve already destroyed the fish stocks in the Gulf. There is nothing left here for the spill to kill. Blue fin are only one example.

So …

When they properly pursue the US people and the US businesses that have done a lot worse than BP’s mess in other countries, I might take them seriously.

Come on Obama. Put your money and your bullying where your mouth is.

How about starting with a solution for Nigeria?
